Forty years ago Dubai was a modest trading port on the Persian Gulf. Today it has the world's tallest building, an indoor ski slope, and an artificial island shaped like a palm tree. The pace of change is part of what makes it interesting. But underneath the ambition, the old city is still there — the gold souk, the spice market, the abra boats crossing the creek. Both sides are worth your time.
